About

I am getting to the age where I have been considering how much time I might have left on this planet ( I reserve judgement on whether there might be another life) and from that thinking came the idea for this blog.

I figured if I wrote about what I was doing, photographing, talking about or thinking on each of the last 1500 Saturdays of my life then it might concentrate my mind on what is good and bad about life in general and my life in particular. It also serves to stop me just doing nothing !

I feel sure these last Saturdays will be filled with all kinds of physical and emotional journeys as I seek out interesting, useful, relaxing or just downright fun ways of spending these last days.

There will be opinions, lots of them as I am passionate about injustice, maybe poetry and always photographs..

I hope you will have fun reading my blog ( or occasionally be challenged, enraged, or have your thoughts positively provoked! ) and please feel free to join in by commenting.. 😉

This blog has proved to be much more of a political platform than I had originally envisaged and as those who have been following for a while will be aware I do not write every week now as life gets in the way. I also have a photography blog running alongside this one and you can see by clicking here

I can be contacted on hellenjoy@hotmail.co.uk

Hi Helen, FATman posted a request by you a few days ago asking how to check the size of a photo to see if it meets the competition criteria. I’d suggest using your Photoshop Elements 7. It really couldn’t be much easier. First of all, the minimum size of 1024 px (pixels) at 72 dpi (dots [or pixels] per inch) would be met by a photo whose longest side is 14.22 inches (this is achieved by dividing 1024 by 72. At 300 dpi, this photo would have to have a minimum longest side of 3.413 inches (dividing 1024 by 300). If you shoot at a reasonably good resolution, your photos should easily meet this criterion. To be sure, with your photo open in the PS window, click on Image, then on Resize and Image Size. If the values in the upper two windows (Width and Height) are in pixels, the larger value is the length of the longest side in pixels. If they say “percent,” click on the down arrow to the right of either of the unit boxes and change it to pixels. You can now read off the size of your longest side. Hope this helps! –Gary

Thanks Gary.. I appreciate you taking the time to answer my query.. Someone else emailed me privately with some help too 🙂 It was the bit about compression that particularly confused me and I think I have a handle on it now.. There are stars in the blogosphere and you are among them 😀

What a wonderful blog to keep, I absolutely love this idea, I was thinking to open a second blog, and have twice, but they didn’t make it very far, only a couple of days then I shut them down. You may of just inspired me to give it another try, thank you very much.

You have a wonderful second blog here..

I now realise that you have two blogs, so please ignore my previous comment stating that I was not following your blog. By the way, both are great.

I vaguely remember a story (if anyone knows the full story please feel free to update) about a Granddad and his grandson. The Granddad had a large sweet jar that the little lad had seen many times. It was originally full of glass marbles. On this particular day, the little boy visited his Pops and witnessed him taking out the last marble that was in the jar. Granddad then proceeded to throw it away.

The little lad couldn’t contain himself. “Granddad….every Saturday I come to your house and every morning we go down to the garage, you take out a marble and you throw it away….Why?”

Granddad sat him down and said…”OK, the Bible says that a man can expect to live three score years and ten yes?….That’s 70 years, so when I had my 60th birthday I put one marble for every Saturday between my sixtieth and seventieth birthday in the sweet jar. The little lad said yes but you have thrown them all away. Granddad said yes..I have thrown one marble away every Saturday, and that one I have just thrown was the last one!!!!!”

I had my 70th in December 2011….I can’t stop thinking about that Bl***y sweet Jar!

    warm wishes Helen
