Million Women Rise – End Violence Against Women Now! (Warning re one photo)

Saturday 1429 – 9th March 2013

This is a long post today but I hope you’ll stick with it because it is such an important issue that affects us all. Thank you.

Wome not sex object t-shirt

“Women have been socially, culturally and economically conditioned to defer to men, to take our lead from men, to behave in ways approved of  by men. On this particular day, we want women to come and feel the  strength, the exhilaration and power of being with other women, to  celebrate ourselves, to sing, shout and chant at the top of our voices,  in all our diversity, to demonstrate however we want because we’re  women  in the company of other women”

Violence against women “includes  physical, sexual, psychological and Economic violence, harassment or  intimidation; sexual abuse or rape, including marital rape and sexual  slavery; battery; domestic violence; forced prostitution; trafficking in  women and girls; burning or acid throwing; female genital mutilation;  female feticide and infanticide; violence in armed conflict; systemic  rape; forced pregnancy; and forced marriage.” from Million Women Rise website

It wasn’t all serious the women had fun too and I’ll show you some faces of the women who took part.. but be warned that there is a photo which is pretty gruesome. It needs to be understood just how bad things can be for women.

First take a look at what happened just before the start.  This certainly grabbed the attention of the photographers there ! !! Her t-shirt reads “I like women hot not burned”

Breathing fire !..

Despite this being a very serious subject there was a carnival feeling on the march itself with drums and whistles..

I joined the Million Women Rise march through the heart of London today, including through Soho the traditional London home of prostitution, to say NO as loudly as I could to this violence against women.  I marched because women and girls have the right to live free from violence or the fear of violence and we seem to be further away than ever from achieving this.

I will give you some statistics later in this piece but it’s a terrible fact that male violence against women is endemic throughout the world in all levels of society and as sisters womanhood needs to say that it’s time to stop this now. We need to show our daughters that unity is strength and the voices of many are louder  together than a single voice. Women were encouraged to wear red to “symbolise the colour of Woman and her blood, the blood of our sisters who have been murdered and raped, our blood which contains life, courage, respect, dignity and protection”

Stamp out sexism posterI found this a very moving event marching with women from all backgrounds united in the desire to highlight this violence. Some women I spoke to had been victims of violence,  rape and brutality themselves. Others like myself were there to show solidarity.

These women were not “man hating lesbians” as had been suggested to one woman by a male colleague at her place of work. I certainly don’t hate men though I’m sure there were some on the march who had good reason to feel hate towards them. These were ordinary women who want to make a difference and encourage change. As I walked past people who lined the streets to watch DSC_0171us, I couldn’t help looking at their faces and wondering how many of the women had been victims of male violence and how many of the men had abused the women in their lives..

In 2010 Theresa May, both Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equality, gave a speech at the Women’s Aid National Conference. She said  ” I believe I have a unique opportunity to bring about real change to the lives and to the status of women in this country.” but during her whole speech she used the word man just once” during the rest of the speech she talked about the abuse of women as though this was some sort of abstract event. It isn’t. What she should have done is made it clear that this violence is by men against women.   This has to be absolutely clear.  Theresa May’s speech was full of soundbites but the reality is that now we find that UK councils are making swingeing funding cuts to Domestic Violence services because of lack of funding. “One in five domestic violence centres has cut services in the last year due to funding problems” (Guardian 6.03.13)

There can be no blaming women because of where they were, what they were wearing, that they had been drinking etc, etc. Men must take the responsibility and women must insist upon that.

Here are some stats from the million women website –  If you don’t want to read them all I have highlighted some in red.

UK STATISTICS

The Reality in the UK today:
  • One woman in four will experience domestic violence at some point in her life.
  • Domestic  violence has more repeat victims than any other crime (on  average  there will have been 35 assaults before a victim calls the  police).
  • Two women are murdered every week by their partner or ex partner.
  • One incident of domestic violence is reported to the police every minute.
  • One woman in four will experience sexual assault as an adult.
  • Only 5% of rapes reported to the police result in the perpetrator being convicted in court.
  • Women are more worried about rape than any other crime.
  • 250 cases of forced marriage are reported each year.
  • Up to 1,420 women per year are trafficked into the UK for sexual exploitation
  • One woman a month is murdered in the name of ‘so called’ honour.
  • Nearly 90% of local authorities do not have a rape crisis centre.
  • Over 20,000 girls could be at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the UK.

INTERNATIONAL STATISTICS

  • It is estimated that a woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read .
  • In Lithuania 20 to 50% of those sexually exploited through  prostitution   are believed to be minors. Children as young as age11 are  known to  have  been prostituted.
  • Every year, 2 million girls between the ages of 5 and 15 are coerced, abducted, sold or trafficked into the illegal sex market.
  • 2 million females are killed before of at birth simply because of their sex.
  • One woman dies every minute from pregnancy related causes, most of which are preventable.
  • It is estimated that one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
  • Among  women aged 15-44 years, gender-based violence accounts for  more death  and disability than the combined effects of cancer, malaria,  traffic  accidents and war.

These are shocking statistics aren’t they and have been well known for many years as has the use of sexual violence as a strategy of combat, used systematically to terrorise and humiliate.

The march ended with a rally in Trafalger square, inspirational speakers and music followed by an after march fundraising party and I must congratulate the organisers for a very well organised and timely event. Bravo! On a happier note again, here are some of the all important next generation of girls

What is known is that there are many predominantly female organisations working towards ending violence against women but I will finish by asking this  –

Where is the men’s movement that is standing up and saying “Not in my Name” ?  This phrase is used often about other issues but why isn’t it used about this issue?

Why are men not standing up and shouting from the rooftops that they are ashamed of the way some of their fellow men behave. Why aren’t they campaigning for change in huge numbers?  Are they educating their sons to respect women and stop the violence?  There can be no real change unless men make that change as they are they ones committing the domestic violence, rapes, etc.

Come on men where are you !!!!

Addendum – My American blogger buddy Scilla (see her comment below told me about a men’s initiative It’s called “Ring the Bell” please take a look here   If you are a man reading this anywhere in the world please think about making a promise to help end violence against women

I used good old google to try to find such a campaigning group but I came up with nothing.

If you know of any do tell me about it in the comments below. Thank you.

Finally – This man has the right idea…. in case you cannot see it, on the back of the young man’s shirt are the words ” This is what a feminist looks like”  Much more of this please!

Power to the Women of the World

Saturday 1439 – 29th December 2012

Million women

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a natural kind of freedom that sisterhood holds…
A unity of sisters in a common cause.
Glorious,fully self acknowledged, fabulous.
Free from Self doubt, Self hatred and Self treachery.
The collection of Sisters that honours the feminine spirit and their global contribution.
The space for Self love, authentic Self expression and creativity.
Brimming with organic,intuitive and non-linear ideas and theories.
The stand that all Sisters, everywhere, fearlessly proclaim their bold Self and lead the
Charge to healing and transforming the planet.
The freedom for all sisters is simply to be true to self.
In sisterhood and solidarity,
Million Women Rise
What is a woman’s life worth?  It seems in many parts of the world it is still not worth very much.  This is of course a complex subject and a blog post cannot do it justice so, by necessity, I am going to try to keep this as brief as I can manage
Most of you will know that 2 weeks ago in South Delhi a “young physiotherapy student, was beaten with an iron rod and repeatedly raped on a bus by six men, before her naked body  was thrown from the moving vehicle onto a road”;  her boyfriend was also savagely beaten. Sadly the woman has died from her injuries.
This has rightly caused outrage but sadly is not an isolated incident.
On Wednesday, a 17-year-old girl from a village near Patiala, in Punjab,  killed herself  six weeks  after she was abducted, drugged and gang-raped by  three men.   In her suicide note she blamed her attackers and police hostility for  destroying her life. Police initially refused to formally register a complaint  from the woman  and only acted to arrest her attackers after she had killed  herself”
There is strong evidence too that female fetuses are being aborted in India  “In 1961, for every 1,000 boys under the age of seven, there were 976 girls. Today, the figure has dropped to a dismal 914 girls.”
Gendercide is happening in other countries too, notably China, with its one child policy ( though there are rural exceptions) , where boys are seen as an asset and girls as a drain because they marry into another family and don’t support their parents.
Honour killings too continue in many countries around the world when young girls refuse to marry who their parents want them to or are seen to disgrace the family in other ways.
It’s down not only to culture but to money. (aren’t most things? ) Having boys means someone to carry on the lineage, to work to keep you in old age and in some countries to bring in a dowry ( bride’s parents pay a dowry to the bridegrooms parents in India even though India outlawed dowries in 1961,)
But this post isn’t just about  what is happening in the developing world. Oh yes it is very easy for those with thinly hidden “racist” tendencies to develop a “them and us attitude” by saying it couldn’t possibly happen in the civilised West. Of course that isn’t true, Britain for example has a very poor record in relation to convicting rapists.
UN figures on recorded rape ( doesn’t say whether recorded means reported, brought to trial, or convicted) shows there were nearly 16000 in 2010  or 28.8 per 100,000 of the population,in England and Wales alone and as research suggests between 75 and 95% go unreported you can see this is a very big problem indeed.
For information – Figures for 2010 for USA  were 84767 or 27.3 per 100,000, India 22172  or 1.8 per 100,000 with South Africa at 277,012  or 120 per 100,000  !   I appreciate that definitions of rape are inconsistent but I’m sure you get the idea.
American Republicans recently dismissed  “reproductive rights and other women’s issues as a “distraction” from the economy” and the unbelievably stupid Todd Akin said he “understand[s] from doctors” that rape-induced pregnancies are “really rare,” and that “if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Give me strength!!
It’s also widely believed throughout the Western world as well as in the developing world that if women dress provocatively, drink alcohol or behave in a “certain way” that they somehow deserve to be raped or otherwise mistreated.  THEY/WE DON’T.
Following the bus rape that I mentioned above ” Dr Anita Shukla, a female scientist at a prestigious rural university, told a ”women’s  empowerment” seminar in Madhya Pradesh the rape victim’s injuries were her own  fault.”
”Had the girl simply surrendered when surrounded by six men, she would not  have lost her intestine,” Dr Shukla said. ”Why was she out with her boyfriend  at 10pm?”
Dr Shukla said the woman should not have resisted. ”When a group of men  intend to rape, they will do it. The victim should save herself for bringing the  perpetrators to book.”   She later apologised !! or was made to maybe?  Women are sometimes as guilty for letting the prejudices go unchallenged.
don't tell your daughter
So how do we change this?  It’s in ALL our hands, each and every one of us but particularly women who must be brave and strong as only women can be.
Mothers teach your sons respect for girls/women and your daughters, respect for themselves.  Teach them all about Love and Compassion for each other.
Does this mean I blame women for what is happening. Absolutely NOT but I believe woman must take the power to determine their lives because  history shows that men will try to keep it from us.
The quote at the very top of this page is taken from this website http://www.millionwomenrise.com/  “Million Women Rise is a collective of women who work autonomously as volunteers, without any corporate sponsorship or formal funding. We promote real change that is based on truth, unity and solidarity, peace and love.”
There will be a march in London on the 9th March. I will certainly be there to show solidarity with all women in the world who suffer violence and discrimination.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am the woman

I am the woman who is unstoppable
I am the woman
Whose dreams are immeasurable
I am the woman
Of a different breed, unbelievable
I am the woman
Of all times, incredible
I am a woman
With passion and purpose, unspeakable
I am the woman
Who decides where I should fall
In this universe, unpredictable
I am the woman
Who refuse to lessen my dreams
To meet man’s expectation, inconceivable
I am a woman
Of greatness and this greatness
Should never be compromise, remarkable
I am that GREAT WOMAN

I know I have many male readers and I apologise to those I know out there who are kind and loving but I felt all this had to be said.  There is a page on Million women which gives guidance on what you can do to help and you can read it here http://www.millionwomenrise.com/men-and-boys.html

Finally John Lennon wrote this beautiful song about Woman.. I wish more men would recognise they are nothing without women and indeed owe them a debt of gratitude..

WOMAN

(for the other half of the sky)

Woman I can hardly express
My mixed emotions at my thoughtlessness
After all I’m forever in your debt
And woman I will try to express
My inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success

Woman I know you understand
The little child inside of the man
Please remember my life is in your hands
And woman hold me close to your heart
However distant don’t keep us apart
After all it is written in the stars

Woman please let me explain I never meant to cause you sorrow or pain
So let me tell you again and again and again

I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
Now and forever
I love you, yeah, yeah
